Haze and Your Pregnancy

Everywhere people are talking about the haze which has engulfed our surrounding air. It was pretty bad and the weather was so unhealthy. But.. there were still people who do not wear mask and children playing outside! Don't you love your lungs??

Since I am pregnant, Mr. Fruitheart is so worried about me and the baby's health. He asked me to not be lazy to wash my hands and face, wear a mask, drink PLENTY of water and make sure I stay indoor.

So I googled the impact of haze to pregnant woman. Here are what I found from babycenter: Haze and your pregnancy.

How can the haze affect me and my unborn baby?
The haze can significantly compromise air quality. Numerous studies in other countries have also proven that air pollution can harm unborn infants in various ways.
•Pollutants inhaled by the mother can reach the womb through the umbilical cord.
•Air pollution exposure before birth has been linked with lower IQ in childhood.
•Exposure to smog before birth has been linked to low birth weight, premature births, stillbirths and infant deaths.
•Mothers living in areas with high levels of ozone and carbon monoxide were three times more likely to have babies with cleft lips and palates, and heart valve defects.

The greatest risk occurs during the second month of pregnancy, when the foetus is developing facial structure and organs.

OK, definitely what you inhale, what you eat, what you smell and so on.. your unborn baby will get it too. Mr. Fruitheart once said, it's better to prevent sickness earlier since in the tummy rather than to cure after the baby come out. That is why he always remind his forgetful and lazy wife to drink MILK and take vitamins.

Take precautions:
1. Stay indoor as much as possible. Shut all doors and windows.
2. If you must be outdoor, please wear a mask. (An N95 mask can filter out 95 per cent of particulate larger than 0.3 microns. However, people with heart and lung problems should always consult a doctor first as a mask does decrease air flow.)
3. Stay away from SMOKERS. (Not just during haze, all the time!)
4. Drink lots of water.
5. Wash your hands and face. Clean of the dust and dirt you get from outside.
6. Keep your car windows closed and on the air-cond while you are on the road.

Mr. Fruitheart forwarded this message to me which was forwarded by his friend:
Message from someone who works for National Environment Agency and here's what she advises:

Hi all, please make sure that you keep all windows shut at all times and bathroom doors too. What you breathe in gets lodged deep in your lungs and can't get out. It's the PM2.5 particulate matter that's dangerous. Make sure you cover your nose when outdoors.

From someone who is doing PHD in Biochem, he said that these particulates (in the haze) are too tiny and they will bypass the hairy and mucous nose to lodge into the lungs. As these particulates are non-water solvent, they will stay in the lungs, will cause cells to mutate and potentially cancer cells can develop from there. So do take care and keep your children and elderly folks indoors. And wear N95 masks even though it's a short walk from home to car and office.

Forwarded - Please bring a huge umbrella out today, and avoid rain water at all cost. Government is planning to seed the clouds to rain and according to my chemist friend, the rain water is harmful to human skin.

P/S: I wonder what is in the rain water that they are using to seed the clouds to rain.

Haze

Malaysia had it's worse level of haze in 16 years when I read about it in the Star today.  It is like an annual event to Malaysia, un-welcome one. last year we had it too, and the year before.

It is very unhealthy for us to go out, without wearing a mask. Even if we are wearing a mask, we could get eye irritation easily. Persons with medical problems like asthma, chronic lung disease and allergic skin conditions are likely to be more affected by the haze. Few friends of mine are really worried about their children's health especially those with asthma.

This is the view from my condo.

Supposed to see tall condo near the hills, but no. This was at 7.30 am

No longer able to see the One World Hotel in Bandar Utama. This was at 11 am.

This was at 2.30 pm. Even worse. Cannot see the hills anymore, dry and hot!

I am working from home today and they also had announced school to be closed in KL and Selangor today. Not sure until when. It is really not good for me to go out unless emergency since I am pregnant and also I do not want my children to get sick. For lunch, we ordered Pizza Hut. The guy who sent our lunch were not wearing any mask. Not good young man. Not good!

Below are few extra precautions sent by HSE commitee from work:
• Mask needs to be used by all motorcyclists, outdoor workers, those who are exposed to dusty places and those who are in the high-risk group.
• Those who are in the high risk group as stated above are advised to continue medication as prescribed and take care of their health at all times.
• The public is advised to WASH their hands, face and bathe regularly.
• Those who are having Cough, Flu, Asthma, Eye Irritation, Chronic Lung Infection are required to go to the clinic as soon as possible if symptoms persists.
• Those who are driving in an air-conditioned vehicle needs to start the air-conditioner and close all windows when driving.
• DRINK AS MUCH WATER as possible at all time. (Not all time for muslim…you are in fasting month)
• Those who have children, elderly and relatives who are sick in the house, please do not smoke.
• Smokers are advised to STOP smoking during hours where API is higher than 101
• Those who are in the HIGH RISK category are advised to STAY INDOOR if API exceeds 201
• Please be tuned to the radio, TV and major newspaper to get an update on the haze conditions and heed the advice given by Ministry of Health and Department of Environment

P/S: Stay safe everyone. I hope there will be rain to wash away those haze soon.

Favourite Quote of The Week #24

"It is much easier to become a father than to be one."
~~ Kent Nerburn, Letters to My Son: Reflections on Becoming a Man

The Second Trimester of Pregnancy

See I told you, I am not updating my blog as frequent as I did before. Tired and lazy. I love my bed and pillow much now. I survived my first trimester. Yay!

Those 'nasties' syndrome are not completely gone, but they are still there. I am on my day 110, 15 weeks, day 6 as per the BabyBump application checker. Another 170 more days to go. *loud sigh*

During my last checkup, there was no sign of the baby's gender. I am too excited to know if it's gonna be BLUE or PINK. HEHE. I need to know because I don't like surprises. Not during my pregnancy.

Forgetfulness. This is the part where I really hope everyone near me would understand. I hate myself for being forgetful, but I cannot help myself. You don't expect me to put sticky notes on my body to make me remember things right?

The other day, I totally forgot to wash kiddo's school shirt which I promised him I'd do it that night. He replied with a low disappointment tone, 'It's OK mama, I know you are busy.' It really breaks my heart knowing that I let him down and I felt seriously miserable!

What else I forget? Oh ya, I don't remember where I put my headband. I forgot to wear my wedding ring. I forgot to bring back home the stuff I bought during lunch. Gosh! Having 2 children and soon gonna be 3 makes my brain tired and easily loss my memory huh?

There are of course physical changes in me. Growing belly.I can't wear my 26 size jeans anymore. My weight is now 55KG and I had to wear my maternity pants and skirts. Stretch marks? They were there since 9 years ago, and I'm not expecting it will fade away until the day I stop breathing.

Yes, I'll show that to my kids. How they make mummy's body like a bear, walked like a penguin and eat like nobody's business.

P/S: No idea what to write. Till next entry.

Chiropractic Treatment

First time I heard about chiropractic was when someone mentioned it in Vivy Yusof's IG. If you are wondering who she is, she is the MD for fashionvalet.com. She was having back pain during her pregnancy, and there was this lady who recommended chiropractic treatment located in Bangsar.

Soon after that, I was googling about it. Aha! What is there to waste? I had the same problem too, back pain since 9 years ago from my first pregnancy.

I told Mr. Fruitheart about the treatment. As expected he asked if it is safe for pregnant mother. I said yes and forwarded him the link I found in babycenter. How safe is chiropractic care during pregnancy?

I had difficulties getting up and moving sides during sleeping. I had to move slowly and gently or else, I can feel my bones moving too which is so painful. It was like it's going to break into pieces. Back crackers woo.. But it's actually not! You know when something is rusty and you try to open it? That kind of difficulty.

So on Friday last week, I went to Bangsar Chiropractic. Easy to find the place. I opt for Dr. Twink Lim, female chiropractor. My appointment was at 11.30am, but I had to come early 20 minutes for registration since it was my first time. I was nervous after I heard.. 'ticks' sound. When it was my turn. I was greeted with a very friendly, soft spoken and gentle doctor. She looks so young! So she asked me few questions, how did I get it, have I had any accidents, fall or injuries and so on.

So the treatment begin. I was asked to do some experiment. She asked me to raise my hands and hold it while she pressed her hands trying to push my hands down. After that I was asked to lay down on the bench. My tummy downward. I was like, is this OK doc? Are you sure? Seriously? There was a worried look on Mr. Fruitheart's face too. She said, 'It is OK. I had a 9 months old pregnant lady done it. It's safe.' Phew! You're the Doc. And she put a pillow on the bench to support my tummy.

She started her treatment and did the adjustment. She asked me if I ever exercise. Errr.. no Doc. Then Mr. Fruitheart interrupted, 'She said doing house chores are her exercise.' The Doc smiled and said, no house chores are not exercise. He had to make me blush didn't he? Then she took something and pressed the thing on my leg and back. Eh? No pain. Thank God. Silly me thought it's going to be a painful process. Yeah, I'm the paranoid patient.

My session ended after 20 minutes. I felt OK and relief, back pain gone. You know what Dr. Twink told me? I need to exercise, no need to do the extreme one. Pilates or yoga would do since I am pregnant. Swimming also can. No I do not know how to swim. She told me to drink a lot of water too. And she remind me, HOUSE CHORES IS NOT AN EXERCISE. I got you Doc.

I went for my second adjustment last Wednesday, she did the same thing. And yes, no more difficulties in getting up and moving sides for this pregnant mummy. Hurray! But that doesn't mean it won't come back. She said, I can come for adjustment whenever I feel uncomfortable. It is like you're going for a spa treatment once a month or 'berurut dengan mak bidan' or 'tukang urut'.

I definitely recommend this chiropractic treatment. However, please do consult your doctor first.

P/S: Price wise, first time consultation + treatment is RM200. Follow up treatment and consultation is RM100 as of today.

Just the The Two of Us

It was 3 days long holiday last week due to the King's Birthday on 1st June. We were at my parents house spending the weekend with everyone.

This was a shot at Morib Beach. Nice weather, windy day.. lovely.

Mr. Fruitheart looks like he's 3-4 months pregnant while me covering my tummy. My tummy still small, nothing much to look at though.

P/S: Thank you Allah for this marriage, hope it lasts forever.

He's Being Funny

Mr. Fruitheart: I just noticed we're wearing the same color outfit today.
Me: Hey, we lived in the same house OK.

Yeah, it's one of those days when either you are too tired or too busy thinking about something else. Sampai isteri pakai baju apa pun tak perasan. I guess if I am outfit-less then only he will notice me.

P/S: Plan to wear something pink tomorrow and see if he notice, because he also has a new pink shirt.
